  • 4 large apples, peeled, cored, and quartered
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 sheet sheet puff pastry
  • 1/2 cup whipped cream (optional)

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a heavy ovenproof skillet, melt the sugar over medium heat, stirring continuously until it turns into a light caramel.
  • Add the butter to the caramel and stir until it melts and combines smoothly.
  • Sprinkle the cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves evenly over the caramel.
  • Arrange the apple quarters in the skillet, cut side down, packing them closely together.
  • Cook the apples in the caramel for about 10 minutes, until they start to soften.
  • Roll out the puff pastry and lay it over the apples, tucking the edges into the sides of the skillet.
  • Bake the tart in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, until the pastry is golden brown and puffed.
  • Remove the skillet from the oven and let it sit for a few minutes before carefully inverting the tart onto a serving plate.
  • Serve warm, optionally topped with a dollop of whipped cream.
